Discover this private island paradise, with virgin beaches and the most beautiful, azure waters. An island where nature determines the pace and where we humans are just allowed to look past as guests. A place where the giant sea turtles migrate over in fixed cycles, where life in the water is wilder than in your dreams and where birds cover the cloud. An island where birds, nature and the seasons form the backdrop for an adventure right down to earth.

Bird Island in general

Bird Island Lodge is an environmentally conscious tourist destination. Here, far from the rest of the world, one is alone in keeping an eye on and protecting the surroundings. This is done by implementing different policies and views.

Ecodesign: The hotel has been built using almost exclusively local building materials and employs community staff. The location was carefully selected, among other things, in terms of wind conditions. The hotel has been built in such a way that the need for air conditioning must be as small as possible.

Energy: All the hot water comes from solar panels. Two new and high-performance generators have recently been installed to produce electricity for the whole island, and in this way have been able to save large amounts of fuel. There are no outdoor lights, and guests receive rechargeable flashlights to navigate to the bar or restaurant in the evening and at night. There is no air conditioning, TV or refrigerators in the rooms.

Sustainable Tourism: Bird Island has had the same leadership for 35 years. The focus has always been on protecting nature and wildlife, and at the moment they are working, among other things, to improve the living conditions of the many thousands of terns that visit Bird Island in the period from May to September to incubate the next litter of young. There is also a focus on the island’s turtles. Researchers and NGO staff are offered free stays in return for work (or a report on) with the various projects. Guests at the hotel are welcome to go on trips and to volunteer – especially during the season when turtle eggs are to be protected.

Ecology: Bird Island has its own vegetable garden, where you grow vegetables and fruit. It can be spring onions, cucumber, tomato, various salads, pak choi, pumpkin, eggplant, chili, herbs, papaya or coconut. There is a lot of fish on the island, which of course comes from local fishermen. All organic waste is composted. Drinking water comes from purified rainwater.

Community: It has been a policy for over 35 years to use only community staff. Staff receive free accommodation and food, and staff with children can live with the child up to the age where the law requires them to start school. You offer a loan at zero interest if an employee wants to build a house on the main island. The hotel’s responsible for sustainable tourism, trains new staff and guides them to work longterm with nature and the environment in a sustainable way. If you participate in the hotel’s guided nature trips, you will gain insight into local conditions within, for example, beach law, field care, forestry and more.
