Chumbe Island is a state of the art coastal conservation initiative that started in the 1990s.The nature reserve includes a Coral Reef Sanctuary, which has become the first gazetted marine park in Tanzania, and a Forest Reserve.
The eco-hotel is built with respect for nature, with environmentally friendly technology such as solar-heated hot water and solar cells that generate electricity. The camp is run by people from the local community.
Since its establishment, the Chumbe nature reserve has provided various research opportunities for national and international students and researchers. Your professional snorkel and hiking guides are trained here and will share with you their knowledge about the coral reefs and the marine forests of the island.
Chumbe Island Coral Park has been awarded as one of the world’s best “Global Ecosphere Retreats”, and has also been named a long-term eco-hotel (Long Run Destination) where a good balance between culture, nature, communities and business goals is maintained.
