Join us on a unique adventure for the Nordenskiöld Glacier! We travel right into the heart of the Arctic wilderness with a stay at Basecamp Nordenskiöld, which is located right by this amazing glacier. Here you can really enjoy the silence and feel very far away from everyday life. Eat your breakfast overlooking the deserted and quiet countryside and have a cup of coffee in the afternoon in the sun on the terrace. Maybe you’re spotting a polar bear out on the ice. The various activities are carried out to the extent that wind and weather permit. The order and content can be changed – this is only an indicative program.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Svalbard

We start early in the morning where you will meet the guide at your hotel. We review this week’s plan and routes. We change into survival suits before going to the harbor and the waiting boat. We travel all the way to Billefjorden and Adolf Bay. There are lots of wildlife around the fjord at this time of year, so we have good chances of seeing arctic birds, walruses, white whales and maybe even polar bears. On arrival at the Nordenskiöld lodge we enjoy an outdoor lunch and are told about the place and the surroundings. After lunch it is time to go out into the arctic nature and explore the landscape around us. In the evening we return to the lodge, make a good dinner and maybe take a trip to the sauna. Accommodation in a double room.

Day 2: Arctic fox two cubs standing on grass with blue sky above, Svalbard

We start the day with a good breakfast and if the weather is good we can spend the morning learning how to handle a kayak. There are robust and reliable two-man kayaks at Basecamp Nordenskiöld, so we can all get out on the water in pairs. Kayaking is a perfect way to get around the Arctic and a very traditional way to explore the Arctic coasts. After the introduction, we take a day trip to Brucebyen. We paddle along magnificent glaciers with Arctic wildlife. On the other side of the fjord is Brucebyen. The small village consists of cottages built 100 years ago by a Scottish geologist. The guide tells about the city’s fascinating history. After a long day in the cold of the Arctic Ocean, it is wonderful to relax in the sauna and then enjoy a good dinner. Accommodation in a double room.

Day 3: glacieraventyr

Today we leave for the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast, we review the basic guidelines for how to move safely on a glacier, how to step and what not to. We explore the glacier, which is actually only 300 meters from the house. We spend the day at the glacier and climb up and down the cracks and peaks of the glacier and enjoy the radiant beauty around us. We eat expedition lunch along the way. In the afternoon we go down to the beach, make a fire and grill. Accommodation in a double room.

Day 4: climbing-svalbard

Today we put on our hiking boots and hike to nearby mountain peaks. We explore the beautiful Arctic landscape, where small flowers also grow in the harsh environment. We climb up one of the mountain tops and enjoy an expedition lunch along the way. We hike back to the lodge to warm up the sauna and cook our dinner. Accommodation in a double room.

Day 5: svalbard-karg

After breakfast we have time for one last hike. We take one last photo hike to the glacier or hike to the moraine to take the last pictures of wildlife and the shining glacier. We have lunch in the lodge before returning to civilization. We arrive at Longyearbyen in the evening in our open boats.

Good to know about Svalbard

Despite Svalbard’s northern location, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas at the same latitude. In summer the temperature is around 5 ° C and usually very little rain, but it is quite common with fog and low clouds. Although it rarely rains, the ground is often wet due to the melting snow. Cold winds are common, even in summer. It must be remembered that the weather on Svalbard can change quickly and local temperatures can vary greatly.

In winter, the average temperature is -14 ° C. Temperatures between -20 and -30 degrees are not uncommon. In combination with wind, temperatures can be extremely low.

Longyearbyen has midnight sun from 19 April to 23 August. During this bright period, the sun never goes below the horizon. In contrast, from late October to mid-February, the sun never appears above the horizon. The dark polar nights last from mid-November to the end of January, and during this period you can not distinguish day from night.

At Basecamp Spitsbergen, people are particularly concerned about the global warming of the planet, as it is most visible in our polar regions. The biggest project we can contribute to address this is by planting trees in Kenya. All guests are encouraged to participate in the project. By planting trees, we can reduce CO2 emissions globally. Your contribution is 250 NOK, which is equivalent to being able to plant 8 trees in Kenya.

In Svalbard, you use as few resources as possible, and use organic products to keep your environmental footprint as small as possible.
