Travel on an adventure to remember all your life. At Karen Blixen’s luxury eco-lodge in the Masai Mara, you get the feeling of being back in the time when the savannah was first discovered and when few people besides the Masai had set foot here. The lodge is located on the banks of the river Mara, a spectacular place with the great Maras plains behind the camp and the impressive Ololoabranten. During the day, zebras, elephants and hippos come to quench their thirst from the river right by the camp. You then leave the savannah for barefoot luxury on Kinondo Kwetu by the Indian Ocean.

At Karen Blixen Campyou support genuine ecotourism. The camp is located in the Mara North Conservancy – a 30,000 hectare natural area just adjacent to the Masai Mara National Game Reserve. The area is run and owned by locals, 750 landowners, who directly make money on tourism through the park tickets that you as a guest pay for each night you stay. The cooperation between the tourism industry and the local population is crucial to be able to ensure that these large areas of land that are corridors for wildlife – not least the annual migration of 1 million wildebeest.

The camp is powered by electricity generated by solar panels, shower water is heated by solar panels and in bad weather gas is used to ensure that the water remains comfortable. The staff consists 85% of Masai from the local area, which means that the local community develops, especially as the camp is also involved in strengthening Masai women through jewelery production and honey production. Karen Blixen Hospitality School is run to provide local people with education in the areas needed to get a job in the tourism industry. Research shows that the Masai lack competence in kitchens, garages, crafts in general and therefore the focus is on training chefs and mechanics. Furthermore, the camp also supports an elephant project Mara Elephant Project which works to stop conflicts between humans and game, as well as poaching the elephants to take their pastures. As a guest, you can do an Eco Walk with one of our professional guides and visit several of the projects.

Kinondo Kwetu: The

charm of Kinondo Kwetu is due in large part to its surrounding community and the village of Kinondo, where many of its employees are recruited. Having a respectful interaction with the community is of great importance to Kinondo and its guests. That is why the Kinondo Kwetu Fund has been established, whose main purpose is to provide medical care to the villagers and support the education of children. The fund sponsors and administers sponsorship of school fees in high school. The fund is currently establishing a computer training center for the purpose of educating children and adults.

Kinondo Kwetu Clinic started its operations in November 2008. It offers basic health care at a very low cost, a cost that is waived for those who cannot afford it. Since the start, the clinic has been known for its good work for HIV and TB patients, as well as for its laboratory.
