Capella Lodge, which is part of Beckons, has a strong commitment to sustainability and conservation.
Energy: Lord Howe Island has committed to a pioneering solar energy project where 80% of the energy will be generated from solar panels, replacing the diesel fuel power that currently supplies the island.
Recycling: Because it is a remote island, all waste that is not recycled must be handled via the supply barge that visits the island every two weeks. The Lord Howe Island Board operates the island’s waste management facility with an award-winning recycling program.
- Glass, metal, plastic, cardboard, and organic materials are sorted and recycled, and food waste is composted to reduce the amount of waste that must be transported off the island.
- Single-use plastics are reduced through reusable alternatives for guests and operations.
- Resource-efficient operations are carried out, where purchasing, logistics, and material use are planned to minimize waste at the source.
- 75% of water consumption is collected via rainwater tanks!
Conservation: Nature conservation on Lord Howe is considered a personal priority, and both residents and guests commit to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Residents have a high level of knowledge about the environment they live in and work hard to protect it.
A central focus for Capella Lodge and Lord Howe Island is protecting and restoring the island’s unique biodiversity. Lord Howe Island is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list thanks to its exceptional ecosystems, high proportion of endemic species, and well-preserved marine environments.
Conservation efforts include:
- Protection of endemic species – many plant and animal species on the island are found nowhere else in the world.
- Restoration of natural habitats through replanting and controlling invasive species that threaten the native flora and fauna.
- Marine conservation through the protection of coral reefs, seabird colonies, and marine ecosystems in the surrounding marine area.
- Monitoring biodiversity in collaboration with scientists, conservation organizations, and local authorities.
- Sustainable tourism where visitor numbers are strictly limited to minimize impact on fragile ecosystems.
Capella Lodge supports local initiatives aimed at ensuring tourism contributes positively to nature conservation. By integrating conservation efforts into the guest experience, understanding of the island’s ecological values is heightened while generating financial resources for long-term protection work. The goal is not only to minimize negative environmental impact, but to contribute to a regenerative approach where ecosystems are strengthened and restored for future generations.
