Capella Lodge, which is part of Beckons, is deeply committed to sustainability and conservation.
Energy: Lord Howe Island has committed to a groundbreaking solar energy project where 80% of energy will be generated from solar panels, replacing diesel fuel energy currently powering the island.
Recycling: Because it is a remote island, all waste that is not recycled must be handled by the supply barge that visits the island every two weeks. The Lord Howe Island Board operates the island’s waste management facility with an award-winning recycling program.
- Glass, metal, plastic, cardboard, and organic matter are sorted at the source and recycled, and food waste is composted to reduce the amount of waste that must be transported off the island.
- The use of single-use plastics is reduced through reusable alternatives for guests and operations.
- Resource-efficient operations are carried out where purchasing, logistics, and material usage are planned to minimize waste at the source.
- 75% of water consumption is collected via rainwater tanks!
Conservation: Nature conservation on Lord Howe is considered a personal priority, and both residents and guests commit to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Residents possess a high level of knowledge about the environment they live in and work hard to protect it.
A central focus for Capella Lodge and Lord Howe Island is protecting and restoring the island’s unique biodiversity. Lord Howe Island is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list thanks to its exceptional ecosystems, high proportion of endemic species, and well-preserved marine environments.
Conservation efforts include:
- Protection of endemic species – many plant and animal species on the island are found nowhere else in the world.
- Restoration of natural habitats through replanting and eradication of invasive species that threaten the native flora and fauna.
- Marine conservation through the protection of coral reefs, seabird colonies, and marine ecosystems in the surrounding marine area.
- Monitoring of biodiversity in collaboration with scientists, conservation organizations, and local authorities.
- Sustainable tourism where visitor numbers are strictly capped to minimize impact on fragile ecosystems.
Capella Lodge supports local initiatives aimed at ensuring tourism contributes positively to nature conservation. By integrating conservation efforts into the guest experience, understanding of the island’s ecological values is heightened while generating financial resources for long-term protection work. The goal is not only to minimize negative impacts on nature, but to contribute to a regenerative approach where ecosystems are strengthened and restored for future generations.
