Baraza Resort Beach

Zanzibar – just the name says that here awaits exotic times and sensual experiences! Sir Richard Branson has described Zanzibar as “a beach with coconut white sand and cobalt blue water” and yes, it is great! When you sit leaning against a palm tree and looking up at the clear African night sky, you feel very far away from everything. But Zanzibar is not just paradise beaches and day trips. The capital Stone Town offers lots of history and culture, it is like time has stopped in some places going back almost 200 years. Here you find narrow alleys, bazaars and commercial life, mosques and beautiful, historic houses and mansions, where the original owners spent fortunes on making his house the most impressive in the neighbourhood. Feel free to get a little lost here – it can lead you to exciting surprises once you turn a new street corner…

Bwejuu Clinic

Baraza engages in many great projects. An example is the clinic for pregnant women in the city of Bwejuu, where the most often relatively young women are helped well through pregnancy and the time after birth. The clinic opened in 2014 with, among other things, support from the organization New Hope. The hotel is happy to encourage and facilitate contact with other, similar projects.

The hotel’s work with the environment and sustainability

  • All villas get electricity from solar cells
  • The hotel’s garden supplies vegetables
  • The water comes from a desalination plant. This means that the water used in the hotel is produced locally, and thus does not strain the city’s water supply.
  • Materials and supplies come primarily from the local community – this includes fruit, fish, meat and building materials.
  • When Baraza opened, they also started a local hotel school. The school teaches tourism and language (English) and the result is that the graduates gain a basic knowledge of tourism and the needs of visitors. This provides the basis for many generations of livelihoods. An important capacity building initiative creating job opportunities for the local community.
  • Together with the sister hotels Baraza Breezes and Baraza Palms, they have worked on building a mosque, improving the clinic, working on water supply, buying beds and bedding and much more.
  • Once a year, management and staff come together to do something positive for the local community. It can be to clear rubbish away from the beaches, arrange a football match with a good cause or the like.
