Big migration safari, Kenya

Experience one of the animal kingdom’s greatest wonders – the iconic Great Migration of two million wildebeest, zebras, and herbivores moving between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. June through September is peak safari season, and the Great Migration is in full swing. Under the African sun and clear blue skies, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make their way into the Masai Mara.  Imagine standing on the banks of the Mara River, your heart pounding as you watch the herds plunge into the swirling waters, braving the crocodiles lying in wait. It is nature’s drama at its finest.

Tips for your journey

Good to know about Kenya & Masai Mara: It is a large reserve in southwestern Kenya that is the continuation of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The area is named after the Maasai (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when viewed from a distance: “Mara”, which is Maa (the Maasai language) for “spotted”, an apt description for trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.

Travel etiquette:  In the Masai Mara, water is a scarce commodity, so use it sparingly. The Maasai are a proud people; always ask before taking photos. Bring small bills in local currency to be able to buy local handicrafts in the villages. Shake hands with those you meet – an etiquette code here.

Mobile network and email: Email and internet access are available at the camp. The mobile network works well. Basecamp management requests that guests turn off their mobile phones or use them discreetly.

Time zone: GMT + 3

Vaccinations: Read more about vaccinations here.

Packing:  On safari in the Masai Mara, you are normally 4,200–5,000 ft (1,300–1,500 m) above sea level; nights and evenings can be chilly. Bring a warm sweater and good walking shoes. Bring a small daypack to carry water, binoculars, and a camera. Soft duffel bags are easier to pack in the vehicles you travel in; if flying, the maximum weight is 15 kg per person. Mosquito nets are provided, but feel free to bring mosquito repellent.

Local currency:  Kenyan Shilling

Please note:  Kenya has instituted a ban on plastic bags, and this is checked at customs. Bringing in plastic bags can incur heavy fines.

Weather:  Masai Mara Weather

Water:  Clean water is available at the camp.

Safety:  Your safety is our priority. In Nairobi, you should not walk around alone and should avoid certain downtown areas.

Wildlife trophies: Kenya works very consciously against all forms of poaching and trafficking of wildlife trophies. Under Kenya’s Wildlife Act, it is illegal to remove any kind of bone, horn, tooth, etc., from the savanna, as well as larger shells from the coast. Leave what you find where it belongs. If you are caught with anything in your luggage, it can lead to long prison sentences and heavy fines.

Travel entry requirements: : When departing from Sweden, you must ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your return journey and that there are 2 blank pages remaining for visa stamps.

All travelers to Kenya must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) as well as mandatory traveler health insurance (new as of October 6, 2026) and be approved to visit the country. This is done on their website by following their instructions (applicants should have their passport, travel details, and payment card ready). The price is 30 USD per person (including children) + a small administrative fee for the eTA, and 44 USD per person (including children) for the health insurance. If you are traveling as a family, you can apply together. Apply at least 3 weeks before departure.

  • Among other things, it must cover emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, and repatriation. It is mandatory regardless of whether you already have comprehensive travel insurance.

PLEASE NOTE that the above may change at short notice, which is why it is important that you keep yourself updated. Ecolyx strives to keep updated to the best of our ability.

How does my trip contribute?

This product meets our requirements for Ecorating, a product that is good for humans and the environment.

Your trip supports Saruni Basecamp in using the best eco-technical solutions: all lighting, water heating, and electricity within the camp come from solar energy. Closed septic tanks are used for the toilets, saving water, and waste is sorted and recycled in the best possible way. All organic material, such as food waste, is composted on site and used to fertilize Obama’s tree plantation. Irrigation of the tree plantation is done with so-called greywater (from baths, dishwashing, and laundry) from the showers. This water is nearly pure since biodegradable soap is also used at the camps.

Basecamp Explorer offers experiences that differ significantly from many other safari companies/lodges. Here, for example, you can go on a standard, classic jeep safari, meet the women behind BMB—a fair-trade art project—visit the local community, or walk with “Big Cat Scouts”. Many of Basecamp’s adventures in the beautiful surroundings of the Masai Mara Reserve are done on foot. Your hosts, the Maasai, will give you an authentic experience and a deeper understanding of the Mara, its culture, and wilderness through the eyes of the locals.

Your trip contributes by creating jobs; 85% of the employees at Basecamp Explorer are locals, and educational scholarships are awarded every year.

Projects:

Empowering Maasai women;
In 2002, the Basecamp Masai Brand project was launched—a craft project producing and selling Maasai jewelry—run by 150 local Maasai women whose lives are positively impacted by gaining access to income and development.

Rewild the Masai Mara;
Natural areas are protected and preserved through the largest indigenous tree nursery in the Mara, where over 178,000 trees have been planted around the main camp. A tree planting project around the main camp began back in 1998, resulting in an improved natural environment with richer bird and animal life. Up until December 2019, the camp has planted 178,000 trees. These measures restore biodiversity and increase resilience against the negative effects of climate change. In connection with this reforestation project of the Masai Mara, the camp collaborates with Maasai and local landowners to implement a larger waste management program through waste collection and recycling.

Biodiversity Conservation, Mara Naboisho;
Mara Naboisho Conservancy – a project to conserve land encompasses a 26,000-hectare wilderness area. The conservancy is run by the Naboisho Maasai community and consists of 500 landowners. The Mara Naboisho Conservancy is a sustainable, transparent, and fair model that ensures tourism truly pays for itself by creating long-term benefits for everyone. As a guest, you contribute directly to the local Maasai landowners through the park fees you pay.

As a guest, you contribute to the above projects through your stay at any of the camps.
