Lord Howe Island – a secluded island paradise in Australia

Lord Howe Island rises like a jewel from the depths of the ocean, offering one of the world’s most preserved island paradises, where dramatic mountains, subtropical rainforest, and coral reefs coexist in unique natural harmony. The island welcomes only 400 visitors per year and is home to the planet’s southernmost coral reef. Stroll along some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, which you often have all to yourself. Climb one of the seven volcanic peaks where the island’s true beauty reveals itself from above—an exhilarating feeling. A stay on Lord Howe Island is like being part of a living David Attenborough documentary. Beyond the salt spray and lush rainforests, a sense of tranquility and awe in the face of nature’s splendor sets in.

The experience

This program is a source of inspiration — each trip is unique and tailored to you.

Snorkel directly from the beach: SOLHR-marine-playground

Snorkel directly from the beach

Lord Howe Island offers spectacular snorkeling just 30 meters from the beach, whose marine park covers approximately 460 square kilometers. The ocean here is a blend of warm tropical and cooler temperate ocean currents, home to over 500 fish species, more than 90 coral species, and countless other marine species, many of which are found only in the local area. Put on fins and a mask and discover a colorful world beneath the surface where green sea turtles, kingfish, trevally, and rays await you. When the tide recedes, the lagoon turns into a vast aquarium that you can also explore on foot. The island also offers world-class diving, with over 60 dive sites including the famous Ball’s Pyramid—the world’s tallest volcanic basalt sea stack, rising 572 meters high.

Kayaking: SOLHR-marine-sanctuary

Kayaking

Kayaking in Lord Howe Island’s lagoon is a peaceful experience. When the water is glassy and you slowly glide across, you can see fish swimming through the colorful coral gardens below. At the outer reef, there are buoys where you can tie up your kayak and jump in for a snorkel. We also recommend a guided kayak tour to the Eye of Roach—a large cave through Roach Island, about 2 km from Neds Beach. It is one of Lord Howe’s best and most thrilling experiences. The water along the way is deep, and you may spot sharks, sea turtles, and large schools of fish.

Hike in the rainforest: SOLHR-island-walks

Hike in the rainforest

On Lord Howe Island, you can go on fantastic hikes—some of the trails offer real challenges while the natural beauty and biodiversity will take your breath away. Here you will find beaches, sand dunes, limestone plains, hills, valleys, and mountains. All boast unique subtropical vegetation ranging from wetlands to rainforest. Here you can play David Attenborough and explore the island—best of all, you don’t have to worry about venomous snakes or spiders, as there are none here.

The Capella Lodge dining experience

Breakfasts at Capella Lodge offer a wonderful start to the day; perhaps you’ve already had your first cup of coffee or tea on the terrace before heading to the restaurant for the day’s first meal. Choose from daily juices or smoothies, homemade bread, and fresh fruit, followed by an à la carte selection. For lunch, you might dine at one of the local cafés or restaurants, or at the lodge. Freshly caught fish and chips is usually an excellent choice. Dinners never disappoint either! An appetizer might feature scallops with pistachios, lemon, and Jerusalem artichoke, followed by mains such as lamb with mint yogurt and hazelnuts, or amberjack fish with yaki dressing, cabbage, and popcorn, accompanied by a fine wine from South Australia. Naturally, excellent vegetarian and vegan options are also available.

How does my trip contribute?

This product meets our requirements for Ecorating, a product that is good for humans and the environment.

Capella Lodge, which is part of Beckons, is deeply committed to sustainability and conservation.

Energy: Lord Howe Island has committed to a groundbreaking solar energy project where 80% of energy will be generated from solar panels, replacing diesel fuel energy currently powering the island.

Recycling: Because it is a remote island, all waste that is not recycled must be handled by the supply barge that visits the island every two weeks. The Lord Howe Island Board operates the island’s waste management facility with an award-winning recycling program.

  • Glass, metal, plastic, cardboard, and organic matter are sorted at the source and recycled, and food waste is composted to reduce the amount of waste that must be transported off the island.
  • The use of single-use plastics is reduced through reusable alternatives for guests and operations.
  • Resource-efficient operations are carried out where purchasing, logistics, and material usage are planned to minimize waste at the source.
  • 75% of water consumption is collected via rainwater tanks!

Conservation: Nature conservation on Lord Howe is considered a personal priority, and both residents and guests commit to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Residents possess a high level of knowledge about the environment they live in and work hard to protect it.

A central focus for Capella Lodge and Lord Howe Island is protecting and restoring the island’s unique biodiversity. Lord Howe Island is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list thanks to its exceptional ecosystems, high proportion of endemic species, and well-preserved marine environments.

Conservation efforts include:

  • Protection of endemic species – many plant and animal species on the island are found nowhere else in the world.
  • Restoration of natural habitats through replanting and eradication of invasive species that threaten the native flora and fauna.
  • Marine conservation through the protection of coral reefs, seabird colonies, and marine ecosystems in the surrounding marine area.
  • Monitoring of biodiversity in collaboration with scientists, conservation organizations, and local authorities.
  • Sustainable tourism where visitor numbers are strictly capped to minimize impact on fragile ecosystems.

Capella Lodge supports local initiatives aimed at ensuring tourism contributes positively to nature conservation. By integrating conservation efforts into the guest experience, understanding of the island’s ecological values is heightened while generating financial resources for long-term protection work. The goal is not only to minimize negative impacts on nature, but to contribute to a regenerative approach where ecosystems are strengthened and restored for future generations.
