Playa Cativo Lodge strives to be 100% sustainable and takes responsibility for protecting the rainforest and the ocean, as well as supporting the local community. Conservation and community are at the core of the lodge’s identity. There is a deep responsibility felt to protect and support the natural ecosystem in which they live and operate, as well as a desire to give back to the residents of Golfo Dulce, who have generously welcomed the lodge into their broader community.
To date, Playa Cativo has contributed to funding turtle nesting projects, Golfito street improvements, and a coral protection and restoration project, among other initiatives.
As with many lodges and neighbors in the Golfo Dulce and Osa Peninsula area, the lack of an electrical grid creates a need to generate electricity on site. At Playa Cativo Eco Lodge, 100% clean electrical energy is generated with hydropower, complemented by solar panels, and water is also heated using solar energy. In turn, guests can enjoy clean air and undisturbed silence. The lodge generates all its electricity from hydropower and solar energy. They purchase locally and grow their own vegetables and herbs at the hotel.
They hire locally—investing in their team’s training and professional development, including English lessons and opportunities for both national and international education. Respect and collaboration are at the core of how they work together, helping the lodge attract and retain top talent. They proudly employ only Ticos, support the local economy, and give back through community-focused initiatives.
A large boat was built exclusively for team members, Cativo Libertad, to help the team stay in touch with their families, despite the lodge’s very remote location. Everything done is rooted in care—because they love their team, and when they are happy and supported, it shines through in every guest experience.

They are also pleased to announce that the official Playa Cativo Foundation is currently under development. Soon, you as a guest will have the opportunity to support conservation- and community-focused philanthropic initiatives through a soon-to-be-launched local and US-based foundation.
