Tips for your journey

Good to know about Kenya & Masai Mara: Is a large reserve in southwestern Kenya that is the continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The area is named after the Maasai (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when viewed from afar: “Mara,” which is Maa (the Maasai language) for “spotted,” an apt description of the trees, shrubs, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.

Travel etiquette:  In Masai Mara, water is a scarce resource, so use it sparingly. The Maasai are a proud people; always ask before taking photos. Bring small bills in local currency to be able to purchase local crafts out in the villages. Shake hands with people you meet – a code of courtesy here.

Mobile network and email: Email and internet access are available at the hotel. The mobile network works well. Basecamp management requests that you turn off your phone or use it discreetly.

Time zone: GMT + 3

Vaccinations: Read more about vaccinations here.

Packing:  On safari in Masai Mara, you are normally 1,300–1,500 m above sea level; nights and evenings can be chilly. Bring a warmer sweater, good walking shoes. Bring a small daypack for water, binoculars, camera. Soft bags are easier to pack in the vehicles you travel in; if flying, the maximum weight is 15 kg per person. Mosquito nets are provided, but please bring mosquito spray.

Local currency:  Kenyan Shilling

Please note:  Kenya has introduced a ban on plastic bags, and this is checked at customs. Bringing in plastic bags can incur heavy fines.

Weather:  Weather Masai Mara

Water:  Clean drinking water is available at the camp.

Safety:  Your safety is our priority. In Nairobi, do not walk around alone and avoid certain areas Downtown.

How does my trip contribute?

This product meets our requirements for Ecorating, a product that is good for humans and the environment.

Basecamp Adventure and Wilderness Camp

Your trip supports Saruni Basecamp in using the best ecotechnical solutions: all lighting, water heating, and electricity within the camp come from solar power. Closed septic tanks are used for toilets, conserving water, while waste is sorted and recycled in the best possible way. Your journey contributes by creating jobs; 85% of employees at Saruni Basecamp are local residents from the surrounding area.

Empowering Masai women;

In 2002, the Basecamp Masai Brand project was started – a handicraft project producing and selling Maasai jewelry – run by more than 250 local Maasai women whose lives are positively impacted through access to income and empowerment.

Rewild the Masai Mara;

Natural areas are protected and conserved through the largest indigenous tree nursery in the Mara. Back in 1998, a tree planting project was launched around the main camp, resulting in an improved natural environment with rich bird and wildlife. To date, the camp has planted 180,000 trees. These measures restore biodiversity and enhance resilience against the negative impacts of climate change. In connection with this reforestation project of the Masai Mara, the camp collaborates with Maasai and local landowners to implement a major waste management program through waste collection and recycling.

Biodiversity Conservation, Mara Naboisho;

Mara Naboisho Conservancy – a land conservation project encompasses a 26,000-hectare wilderness area. The conservancy is managed by the Naboisho Maasai community and consists of more than 500 landowners. Mara Naboisho is a sustainable, transparent, and equitable model ensuring that tourism truly pays for itself by generating long-term benefits for all. Here, as a guest, you contribute directly to the local Maasai landowners through the park fees you pay.
